NEED – Cover Reveal

Sunday, March 24th, 2013

I know I’m late but I still NEED to show you this fabulous cover…

**Yes, you may groan, that was bad**

I loved Stephanie Lawton’s predecessor WANT and am really looking forward to reading NEED.  However, readers need to know that NEED is not YA/NA – it is very much an adult read…

And since I’m an adult, yay for me!

Need

Release date: May 17, 2013

Synopsis:

Isaac Laroche is cursed. All he wants to do is hide out and feel sorry for himself. Never mind that he got caught sleeping with his seventeen-year-old piano student, or that he abandoned her when the truth was exposed.

Isaac’s feisty high school sweetheart has different plans. Heather Swann has returned to their hometown of Mobile, Alabama, to regroup after breaking up with her troll of a fiancé. She’s restless and looking for a diversion, but she bites off more than she can chew when she sets her sights on rehabilitating Isaac with her unorthodox sexual, mental, and physical plans.

The two quickly reconnect, but their happiness is threatened by family secrets, old vendettas and the death of a beloved father-figure.

Can Heather handle Isaac’s baggage, or will her own come back to haunt them both?

Author’s Bio:

After collecting a couple English degrees in the Midwest, Stephanie Lawton suddenly awoke in the deepest reaches of the Deep South. Culture shock inspired her to write about Mobile, Alabama, her adopted city, and all the ways Southern culture, history and attitudes seduce the unsuspecting.

A lover of all things gothic, she can often be spotted photographing old cemeteries, historic buildings and, ironically, the beautiful beaches of the Gulf Coast. She also has a tendency to psychoanalyze people, which comes in handy when creating character profiles.

Book Birthday – WANT by Stephanie Lawton

Thursday, June 7th, 2012

I’m so happy to help Stephanie celebrate the release of her wonderful new YA novel WANT. I’ve read it – so I mean it when I say it’s wonderful. (You can find my review on Goodreads HERE if you want to hear how wonderful I think it is…)

Gorgeous cover, isn’t it? *SIGH*

Here’s the cool part! Stephanie sent me an interview with the one and ONLY Dave Gaston. You know, Dave? From the book? Don’t know him – BUY the book! Sit back and prepare to be amused. :)

1. Can you tell us your name and the title of the book you live in? I’m Dave Gaston and I live in a book called Want by Stephanie Lawton. Sexy title, yeah?

2. Describe to our readers your role in the book. That might be a little spoilery, so let’s just say I’m a good friend to both main characters. A true friend, you might say. I also fancy myself to be the comic relief. Did I mention that I threatened to take over the whole book? The author had to restrain me, which—let me tell you—was kind of exciting, if you know what I mean.

3. How did you convince your author to put you in this book? For example, did you visit a dream or make yourself known some other way? I just showed up. She had no idea where I came from, but once she started writing my scenes, I had her under my thumb. I actually had her in tears from laughing so hard. (She’s pretty easy that way.)

4. Would you tell us about one of your favorite friends from this book? Ugh. That’s where things get complicated. I can’t really talk about it without majorly invading that person’s privacy and ruining the plot.

5. What would you like our readers to know about you? Well, I like long walks on the beach … Okay, seriously, I’d like readers to know that although I joke around a lot, if someone messes with my friends or family, I will take them down in a horrible and creatively violent way. Also, I can touch my chin with my tongue.

6. Did you learn anything during your adventure in this book? You know, I really did and I’m not afraid to admit it. I learned to be a little more open-minded and I learned that people change—sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse, and you have to acknowledge those changes instead of seeing people the way they were or the way you want them to be. Wow, that sounds really serious. I also learned not to change the subject when speaking to a redheaded Taurus because she will latch onto a topic and tear you to pieces until you are honest with her. Man, I love that. I’m also a little turned on right now.

7. Can you tell us what you think is the most exciting thing that happened to you in your book? No, I can’t. It happens at the end and it wasn’t so much exciting as terrifying. Now, if you’re talking about the other kind of exciting, well, this guy doesn’t kiss and tell.

8. Is there anything in your story you wish you hadn’t done? Why? Oh, you better believe it. I left when I shouldn’t have and it almost cost me my whole world. Can’t get any more specific.

9. Is there anything you would like to have done but your author stopped you? That is such a dangerous question. Yes, there’s a lot I would’ve liked to have done, but I’m kind of a side character for much of the book. If I acted on what I wanted to do, I’d be no better than one of the other characters. Ahem. Also, the book is told from Juli’s point-of-view. She’s seventeen, so she’s never even heard of half the things I wanted to do. Rawr.

Flash questions:

  • Craziest thing you’ve ever done? My friends once dared me to hit on a drag queen. I still have nightmares.
  • Biggest regret? Not fighting harder for someone I loved.
  • If you were to get a tattoo, what would it be, where, and why? Oh, crap. Um, I’d get a Mardi Gras mask or fleur-de-lis over my heart to remind me to always stay vigilant.
  • Favorite book? Lolita. Just kidding. Probably the one I’m in.
  • Someone asks you to go skydiving. What’s your answer? Hell, yeah!
  • If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing? Begging on the streets. Or stripping.
  • If they were to name a crayon color after you, what would it be? Red Hot Love. Stop laughing.
  • Were you easy or hard to write? Easy like Sunday morning.
  • Your motto? Good things come to those who wait. Oh, and fifteen will get you twenty.
  • Absolute worst thing you’ve ever done? I once put peroxide in my oldest sister’s hairspray. She deserved it.
  • Give us a detail about yourself that’s not in your book. I still have my childhood teddy bear. It’s a walrus, actually. His name is Willy.

Thanks for sharing the interview Stephanie! And HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY!

Special Friday-Eve Spotlight: STEPHANIE LAWTON :)

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

Adding a special interview this week – in addition to my Tuesday Talent spot.

Today I’m tickled pink to have the talented Miss Stephanie Lawton. Her debut Young Adult novel, WANT, is now available for pre-order (here) and promises to be one awesome read. Stephanie is pretty awesome herself, as you’ll soon find out…

Me: What was the first book you read that grabbed you? What genre? Who is the author?

S.L: I was a voracious reader as a kid, so it’s hard to say which was the actual first, but I remember loving both the original Nancy Drew books as well as the Case Files that appeared in the late 80s? Early 90s?

I grew up in a small town and had to travel 45 minutes to get to a book store. I’d have them read by the time we got home. Oops.

Me: Is there an author that you get fan-girl crazy over? Have you ever met him/her? Do you want to?

S.L: This is embarrassing—yes, I met YA urban fantasy author Cassandra Clare last summer when she did a signing in New Orleans. I had conversed with her over email and Twitter because of the YA book blog I help with, so we sort of “knew” each other, but it didn’t prepare me for the real thing.

I totally froze up and looked at her like a deer in the headlights. BUT we managed to get a decent picture together so I just pretend we’re BFFs. I love you Cassie. *intense stare*

Me:  What’s your:

  • Favorite color? Periwinkle blue—it’s so calming and fresh
  • Favorite season? Fall in the Midwest (we don’t have a real fall in the Deep South)
  • Favorite Hero – movie or book? Mr. Darcy, hands down! (Especially Matthew Macfadyen.)
  • Snack weakness (food or drink)? Cereal—my family can tell when I’m having trouble with a scene because I hit the cereal hard.
  • What’s your Astrological sign? Taurus—I’m totally stubborn :)
  • Do you write sweet and cuddly or toe-curling steamy lovin’ stories? My books are upper YA, so I can’t get too carried away, but they definitely lean toward the toe-curling steamy side. Probably a little more than they should …
  • Do you read sweet and cuddly or toe-curling steamy lovin’ stories? I read mostly YA and it varies from book to book. As for adult books, I definitely gravitate toward toe-curling!

Me: What’s on your desk when you write?

S.L: I write at the kitchen table (sexy, right?) and I always have a glass of water. The other half of the table has my kids’ coloring books and crayons, and in the middle is usually a vase of flowers my husband picked for me (we’re big gardeners). Right now there’s a long-stem red rose he grew. (Awwww!)

Me: Do you write to music or quiet? If you do write with music, can you share one song that’s significantly impacted this story?

S.L: I envy people who can write with music playing. I can’t concentrate with lyrics because I inevitably wind up singing along. While writing Want, I listened to A LOT of Rachmaninoff and classical piano—no lyrics so it was good and really helped set the tone.

His Etude-Tableau #5 in D Minor Op. 33/5 comes up twice in pretty significant scenes. On the total opposite end of the spectrum is “You’re Going Down” by Sick Puppies.

Me:What’s your favorite line from your most recent release? Why?

S.L: I know I should pick something profound, but the smart-alec ones are my favorites. This probably sums it up best: “We don’t always get what we want, and sometimes, when we do, it isn’t worth the price.”

Me: What’s next? You don’t have to get specific – but feel free to leave a tantalizing snippet or cryptic hook.

I’m currently querying Shrapnel, a Southern ghost story with some soft horror, historical fiction and a tiny bit of LGBT.

Here’s the title line: “We carry secrets under our skin like shrapnel. Our surface wounds heal, but the damage festers underneath while we worry what tiny pieces will work their way to the surface for the world to see.”

But this is one of my favorite exchanges: You know in cartoons how steam comes out of the bad guy’s ears? Yeah, that’s Ms. Anne right now as she struggles to free herself. I push her over to a low antique chair. Again, I say a prayer for forgiveness. I lift up the back of Ms. Anne’s hoopskirt—thank God she’s wearing those white pants things underneath or I’d have to claw out my eyes—and drape the metal circle over the back of the chair while I force her to sit. If she wants to get up, she’ll have to take the chair with her. Add in a lack of balance because of her trapped arms, and I’m pretty sure the old lady ain’t going anywhere. “You’re giving up the chance of a lifetime,” she spits. “You know, there were lots of KGC operatives in Ohio. Maybe you’re fighting on the wrong side, boy. Ever think of that? Although I shouldn’t expect you Yankee kin to understand. Your generation doesn’t understand these things. You’ll see—one day the South will rise again. And when we do, we’ll be coming for you.” “Lady, I was taught to respect my elders, but your ass is stuck to a chair by a hoopskirt. I’m pretty sure you’ll never rise again unless I let you.”

Me: Who is your favorite character from Greek Mythology OR which Olympian would you want to be? And why?

Wow, what an interesting question. I always liked Persephone because when spoken, it sounds like my name. But I probably identify with Icarus the most because I tend to throw myself into things whole-hog and get burned.
