Reliving RWA: Literacy Signing

Monday, July 30th, 2012

I had a great time Wednesday night! I always love the turn-out for RWA’s big Literacy Fund-raising event. That I was participating was cool times infinity!

Here are a few picture highlights from the evening…

Yep, I’m totally vibrating with excitement before the doors open!

And I’m sitting at a table with these incredible authors…

Yasmine Galenorn

Shana Galen

I’m looking forward to reading both of their books! We had a great time at the signing – I love to laugh!

I had some fan-girl moments with one of my all time favorite authors, Stephanie Dray (aka Stephanie Draven). She was nominated for the RITA! I’ve mentioned before how much I love her series on Cleopatra Selene. I’m anxiously awaiting book 3 and know it will blow me away. That Stephanie was kind enough to read and endorse Medusa (that’s why I’m holding my book – I’m such a dork! :) ) was/is pure awesomeness!

I also squeezed on the contagiously enthusiastic Karina Cooper. Her can-do attitude and words of encouragement help keep me going! Oh, and her books – brilliant. Picked up her new steam-punk – can’t wait to read it!

Yes, it was an amazing night! And to make it more surreal - there were some people who came to meet me!!! I KNOW! How crazy, weird, fantastic is that?!?

Wednesday (after Tuesday Talent spotlight!) I will share more pics from RWA! I love this conference and how recharged it makes me!

Hope your Monday goes well!

Don’t forget to come see me – twitter party #sashasummers #sashasummer – from 12-1 pm EST today!

Somebody Pinch Me Moment

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

I think it’s fairly accurate to say that every reader has a ‘go-to’ author. I have a handful that I will read, knowing that I will not be disappointed. I’ve mentioned them before, my faves, they are: Julia Quinn, Teresa Medeiros, Stephanie Dray (Stephanie Draven), and Diana Gabaldon. I look forward to their books with all the enthusiasm of a kid on Christmas morning. :)

I’ve been lucky enough to meet them all at writer conferences. I’ve blushed, offered my well worn copy of their book up for signature and hugged it tight once their name was safely inked inside. It’s such a small thing – a signature – to make you feel so giddy.

After one session of fan-girl ranting on my blog, I received a very sweet email from one of the above mentioned authors. I was pretty tickled – okay, I was ridiculously excited… *ahem*  Anyway, said amazing author offered to read Medusa, A Love Story. And, maybe, offer a blurb for the book. And I completely freaked out.

I mean, did I dare take her up on such an offer?

What if she hated it?

What if she hated it so much that she couldn’t offer a blurb?

What if she hated it so much that she asked me never to mention her name again for fear of being associated with me…

Yes, I was a wee bit worried. You see, her opinion mattered because I respect her work. *gulp*

BUT – what if (tiny voice) she did like it?

I swallowed, sent the book and began to chew off all of my nails.

I received her response. And this is what she said:

“This tragic and beautiful retelling of one of the world’s oldest stories tackles the eternal battle between duty and happiness. Medusa, A Love Story broke my heart then filled in the cracks with joy. Sasha Summers is simply a mesmerizing new talent.”

~Stephanie Dray,

Author of the critically acclaimed Song of the Nile

These words are about my book. And they will go on the cover of my book…

I can’t begin to tell you how I felt reading these words. (Or how much I cried and laughed…) Or how they still make me feel. But I can say that I hope I live up to her praise with each and ever book I write.

Books that Should be Movies

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

As you know, I’m a movie-holic. And, I’m a bit of a book-a-holic too. And when my too loves collide it can be a very good thing or an utter catastrophe.

There are some good book to film translations: Harry Potter (duh!), Dear John (preferred the movie to the book- maybe it was Channing Tatum?), 13th Warrior, The Princess Bride, Lord of the Rings trilogy (duh!)

But far more Bad book to film translations. Latest example -  Twilight (the original is super bad – each one gets a bit better. I admit to enjoying them in their badness, though!)

The world, or at least most of the people I know, are holding their breath over the impending Hunger Games premier. I’m not so sure what to think since I was pretty torn over the books. But, good or bad, the series will be a cash cow. I received my invitation from Seneca Cane this morning – you can buy your tickets starting TODAY. (You’re welcome.)

Here’s the trailer. The Hunger Games

But there are books that I’ve read and loved and couldn’t help but ‘see’ as a movie. So why haven’t they been made yet? Here’s hoping:

Outlander  by Diana Gabaldon

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

Lily of the Nile & Song of the Nile (cable mini-series anyone?) by Stephanie Dray

The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsely

What books have you read that SCREAM movie to you? And why?

Things I do when I’m SICK!

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

I’m sick. Which means I’m in bed and fairly useless. Since I’ve given in to the germs I’ve watched a lot of movies and read two books. Here are some very short thoughts on the 5 movies and 2 books.

Cowboys and Aliens (first time) - I didn’t hate it. It was just weird. And Daniel Craig is RIPPED. Like RIPPED… In a very distracting and scene stealing way. Rachel Weisz (his wife) enjoy all of that ripped-ness :)

The Descent (many times) – Caves are still scarier than the monsters. Still a good movie

Return to Me (many times) – Makes me smile. Minnie Driver and David Duchovney were charming

Under the Tuscan Sun (many times) – When you’re sick and cold, this movie will make you feel warm.

Love Actually (many times) – Smiling, happy greatness

Books:

Lola and the Boy Door - read my Goodreads review for details. Bottom line, almost as brilliant as Anna and the French Kiss, meaning it should be on your TBR list. Meaning – a great idea for Christmas for all you reading fans out there. Warning – some language and scenes of intimacy, but spot on for real (no vampires, werewolves, etc) YA and adult lovers of YA.

Song of the Nile – Loved it. Will be detailing on Goodreads shortly. Suffice it say I have a writer/girl crush on Stephanie Dray and this sequel is Awesome. If you’re a historical fiction fan – READ these books.

That’s all – back to bed and meds and more movies and books…
