Holiday Movie Reviews…

Friday, January 4th, 2013

I did lots of driving the last week – lots and lots and lots. I visited both of my parents, which was awesome and saw two of this seasons Big Films – also awesome.

Which movies?

First up, Les Miserable…

I was lucky enough to see the play in 1988 in London. Colm Wilkinson played Jean Valjean. When I heard Colm Wilkinson in the film version (the Bishop) I immediately burst into tears. And stayed that way for a good part of the movie. I know Russell Crowe was a little on the stiff side, but I don’t care. I really enjoyed this film and sincerely hope Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman win all sorts of accolades – they earned them!

The Hobbit…

Revisiting Frodo, Saruman, Galadriel, and Elrond was kind of cool – and kind of not. As my eldest said, this is the Hobbit, right? So why are we spending so much of the time on things not related to the Hobbit. I understood what she meant. And while I loved the gorgeous visuals, I wasn’t all that entranced with the film over all. I felt like I’d been there and done that. I’d rather watch one of the LOR films again – though when he was on screen I did rather enjoy Bilbo – aka Martin Freeman.

What about you? Did you see anything of note – or anything to avoid – over the holidays?

Spring Break Movies!

Friday, March 16th, 2012

This week is Spring Break, so I’ve had all four of my lovely offspring underfoot. Which means I’ve been worse than I normally am at blogging. Forgive me.

BUT, because it’s Spring Break – movies have also been part of my agenda. Here we go:

John Carter – LOVED IT! I don’t care what some critics have said, this movie was fun. The cast was remarkably solid too. It was refreshing to have some unique-looking aliens, a twisty-turny plot and (of course) a totally swoon-worthy love story. John Carter delivered. Didn’t see it in 3-D, don’t know if you need to. But it you love epic, sci-fi, romance, adventures – you’ll love John Carter.

Three Musketeers (2011) – Three reasons to see this movie:  Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans, and Matthew MacFayden. That’s it! Other than these lovely gentlemen, sit back and watch a terrible mash-up (from imagery, gadgetry, to music – Sherlock Holmes meets Pirates of the Caribbean anyone?) of successful films in an attempt to make this one watch-able. Didn’t happen. There was lots of sighing, groaning and head shaking from my living room as a whole. Not recommended – but I thought i’d share the warning.

12 Monkeys – I know this is old. BUT it still stand up. Brad Pitt, Madeline Stowe, and the Bruce Willis really rock this one. If you haven’t seen Terry Gilliam’s film masterpiece, you should.

Remaining films on the Netflix/Demand list: Contagion and the Hurricane. Will let you know. Have a great weekend!

Weekend Movie Reviews

Thumbs Up:

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) – I know this is old, but it’s worth watching again. With a stellar cast and unique look into what life aboard a ship in 1805 during the Napoleonic Wars. This epic chronicles the real life naval adventures of determined, sometimes obsessive, Jack Aubrey – played with relish by Russell Crowe. Besides Crowe, Paul Bettany, Max Pirkis (huge fan – check him out a bit older in HBO’s ROME), and James D’Arcy head up a solid ensemble cast. As I said, this is an older film – but it’sa good film. Unfortunately, I don’t have such nice things to say about the below films – both recently released to DVD.

Neither Up nor Down:

Battle Los Angeles. We made the mistake of watching this AFTER the last listed film. With that in mind, my patience with over the top explosions and action was fairly thin. BUT at least there was PLOT here. Tired and done-to-death plot (a mash up of Independence Day, War of the Worlds, Black Hawk Down), but a plot nonetheless. Aliens invade, a small rag tag troupe of soldiers lose have of their numbers, but manage to take down the mother ship/central command and save the world. It wasn’t bad – but it wasn’t good. B/C grade stalwarts Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, and Bridget Moynahan are the stars in an otherwise unrecognizable cast. I don’t mean that as an insult, the performances were all solid – but they were treading ground well visited so it was an uphill battle to sell this in a new way. It wasn’t their fault that it didn’t happen.

Thumbs Down (Way way down):

Transformers III – I’m not going to waste a lot of time on this one. Sam – screaming little girl in need of meds (Come on Shia – Really? You disappoint me kiddo!). New girl – snarky and unlikable… Beyond the spell-binding lip thingies. Robots – when did they start wearing capes? Sidekicks – too many. Humor – um, not funny… Explosions – I think this was the point of this film. But can explosions and cgi serve as plot? No. No. It. Can’t. Please stop making these movies Mr. Bay. I promise you, I’m going to stop watching them. :)
