Kid #2 made this observation (Bad Things Always Happen in Caves) tonight while we were watching the 13th Warrior.
She’d made this observation before so I decided to make a list of the ‘bad things’. Turns out, she’s right.
Golum lives in a cave – The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Captain Hook decided to drown Tiger Lily in a cave
All kinds of wrong happened in a cave in The Descent (in an awesomely creepy way)
Luke Skywalker was strung up in an ice cave (does this count as an actual cave?) in Empire Strikes Back. And wasn’t
Finding the ‘mother’ in the 13th Warrior
The Tsavo Lions (Ghost and the Darkness) had a scary cave – or den, depending on how technical you want to be here.
The Bone Collector
The alien hive- ship from Cowboys and Aliens
The aliens tunnel/cave thingie in Super 8
Even, Doofenschmirtz (of Phineas and Ferb) attempts to trap the kids in a cave with the self destruct button on one of his ‘Inators’ (Ballad of Bad Beard)
You get the picture. Caves = Bad Things.
Which is weird because I’m finishing the last few pages of Hades story (all anti-hero delectable bad boy goodness) and he LIVES in a cave. Okay, technically it’s the Underworld, but you have to go through a cave, making it part of where he lives … nevermind. All I’m saying is that caves can’t be all bad, right?
Any positive cave stories you can think of? Feel free to add to my Bad List. Let’s see how long this puppy gets

Not all caves are bad. We went to the Cave of the Winds in Colorado last year. They used to have opera concerts in there back at the turn of the 20th century. Indian Echo Caverns in Pennsylvania was awesome. I just realized my last few vacations have involved caves! And I used to hike/explore the caves on the coast outside of Carlsbad, CA.
Book example – Outlander series. Jamie Fraser hides in a cave for several years hiding from British soldiers after the fall of Culloden.
But then, there is a bad cave in the series also with Geillis Duncan (don’t want to ruin it for those who haven’t read it.). So, bad and good things happen. Guess it all depends on the circumstances!
I knew it – good caves exist. And THANK YOU for mentioning that cave that protected Jamie! I mean, we should all be thankful for that cave!!!
And you like them – so that’s another pro-cave hash mark on our imaginary tally board.
Mark Twain wrote about a cave in several of his books– Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher had an adventure in McDougal’s cave.
Great quote: “No man knew the cave; it was an impossible thing.” (Mark Twain)
How could I forget Tom Sawyer? *slaps forehead* Love the quote!
Oh, you are so right! I just realized that Taste has a cave and something bad happens there too!
Can’t wait to read Taste! The cover is absolutely breathtaking!!!!
