Midsummer Night Blog Hop GUEST Interview!!!!

June 21st, 2012 by Sasha

The first part of this interview can be found HERE!

*** Poseidon and Sydney’s conversation continue… Much to both their chagrin.***

Poseidon leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms over his chest. He first appraises the regal Vadnae. This woman held herself with a poise that bespoke confidence. And her clothing revealed her station or wealth. Vadnae was watching her companion, the mortal girl he’d endured being questioned by – Sydney.

He turned his attention back the girl, peering into the girls’ eyes. She is lovely, beyond the grime of the street and the anxious shift of her gaze. He is, for a moment, curious about her. There is an inner strength to this girl, he can tell. And fight, if he has the way of things. But what does she fight for? And why? It might be amusing to learn a bit more about her.

Poseidon: You’ve bored me with your questions. Now I shall ask mine. To look at you, you’ve known hardship. Where do you come from?

Sydney: Yeah, I’ve known hardship. I’ve from this hellhole of a town called Last Hope. I’ve lived on the streets all my life, picking pockets and doing whatever I had to do to survive.  She folds her arms across her chest.  Not that you’d understand that kind of life.

Poseidon: What do you know of challenges? You, a girl?

Sydney: She gives him a tight smile.  I know plenty about challenges. The Guild destroyed my life. I watched as they killed people I cared about and couldn’t do anything to save them. I’ve faced a death sentence. I’ve been tortured. And living on the streets, you do all kinds of things you never think you’d do. She fixes him with a fierce stare.  Sometimes you’re so desperate you sell your own body for a crust of bread. I’ve seen more challenges than most men, and I’ve survived.

Poseidon: You asked me (snort) about a special someone so I shall assume that you are afflicted with such sentimentality. Is your man a warrior? Someone of worth?

Sydney: She laughs.  He’s someone of worth, all right. Willem’s going to be our king, once he defeats his enemies. And after that…  She shrugs and looks away for a moment.  He’ll be king, but I don’t know what happens to us after that.

Poseidon: How many has he killed?

Sydney: Is that how you measure a man, by how many people he’s killed? Sure, he’s killed a lot of people, I think, but he’s an honorable man. And he’s willing to see justice served.

Poseidon: narrowing his eyes.  How many children has he fathered? A man is only a man if he has many sons and has killed many rivals. It is his claim to glory and honor. You, as a lowly woman, cannot achieve such accolades.

Sydney and Vadnae exchange a glance. Then Sydney stares at him, shaking her head.

Sydney: Really? You think being a man means screwing around and having sons? She leans toward him. I’ve met that type before and I wouldn’t say they’ve got any glory or honor. I’d say that’s a man who needs some self-control. But maybe I’ve learned to set my standards higher than the women in your world.  Vadnae tugs on her sleeve, but Sydney brushes her off.   And women don’t have a lot of power here, but we’re damn important. We have power in ways you can’t even imagine. Willem knows that. He asked for my help so he could succeed in freeing Last Hope from the Guild. And just for the record, Willem doesn’t have any children. He’s the kind of man who’d wait for the right woman to spend his life with.

Poseidon: Who is this woman at your side?  Leering.  Are you threatened by me, that you need a chaperone?

Sydney: She laughs.  You don’t scare me. Vadnae is a wizard and a friend. Friends look out for each other. She insisted on coming. Sydney pauses. Maybe she doesn’t trust either of us.

Vadnae: Vadnae gives him a diplomatic smile. Knowing Sydney as I do, I thought it might be prudent for me to come to make sure there weren’t any … unpleasant outcomes as a result of your friendly discussion.

Poseidon: You asked me about mortality. So I shall ask you, Sydney of Last Hope, if you were an Olympian – who would you be? What would your powers be? I know you are a mere mortal, and such questions cannot be fully understood, but I find myself intrigued, nonetheless.

Sydney just smiles.

Sydney: I’ve never met a god before, and now I’m not sure I’d even want to be one. I’ve seen plenty of magic, powerful magic, that is, and been tempted by the faery folk enough to know that magic is more trouble than it’s worth. So no thanks, I’ll stick with this life as a mere mortal. Knowing there’s happiness out there makes the miserable parts of life more bearable. It makes it real.

Poseidonstands, glancing at both women once more.  I’m afraid I’ve lost too much of this day in this dank hovel though your answers were… intriguing. May you both find some satisfaction in this realm, for I see too little to be had here and will not dally a moment longer. I bid you farewell.

*** Neither was the easiest character to ‘interview’ but it was fun trying! Thanks, Cindy, for letting Sydney converse with Poseidon – I know it wasn’t all chocolates and roses.***
