Reliving RWA: Literacy Signing

Monday, July 30th, 2012

I had a great time Wednesday night! I always love the turn-out for RWA’s big Literacy Fund-raising event. That I was participating was cool times infinity!

Here are a few picture highlights from the evening…

Yep, I’m totally vibrating with excitement before the doors open!

And I’m sitting at a table with these incredible authors…

Yasmine Galenorn

Shana Galen

I’m looking forward to reading both of their books! We had a great time at the signing – I love to laugh!

I had some fan-girl moments with one of my all time favorite authors, Stephanie Dray (aka Stephanie Draven). She was nominated for the RITA! I’ve mentioned before how much I love her series on Cleopatra Selene. I’m anxiously awaiting book 3 and know it will blow me away. That Stephanie was kind enough to read and endorse Medusa (that’s why I’m holding my book – I’m such a dork! :) ) was/is pure awesomeness!

I also squeezed on the contagiously enthusiastic Karina Cooper. Her can-do attitude and words of encouragement help keep me going! Oh, and her books – brilliant. Picked up her new steam-punk – can’t wait to read it!

Yes, it was an amazing night! And to make it more surreal - there were some people who came to meet me!!! I KNOW! How crazy, weird, fantastic is that?!?

Wednesday (after Tuesday Talent spotlight!) I will share more pics from RWA! I love this conference and how recharged it makes me!

Hope your Monday goes well!

Don’t forget to come see me – twitter party #sashasummers #sashasummer – from 12-1 pm EST today!

Tuesday Talent – Karilyn Bentley

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

Hi Sasha!! Thank you for having me on your blog today!! I look forward to chatting with you!

Me: What was the first book you read that grabbed you? What genre? Who is the author?

K.B: The first I remember was the Little House on the Prairie novels. ThenNancyDrew. Then Trixie Beldon. Then one of the Merlin series, but I can’t remember who the author was. As far as romance goes, the first one I read since I was a kid was Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Kiss of the Night. It got me hooked on romance.

ME: Is there an author that you get fan-girl crazy over? Have you ever met him/her? Do you want to?

K.B: Well, I’m not sure about fan-girl crazy. J I did meet Sherilyn Kenyon and loved her! Very nice and gracious person. Also met J.R. Ward at a RWA conference and was surprised that she remembered me from the Literacy Signing two nights before. She liked my dress. I was, and still am, impressed that out of all the people in her line (I waited 2 hours to meet her at the signing), she could remember me two days later.

ME: What’s your:

  • Favorite color? Green
  • Favorite season? Late autumn / early winter
  • Favorite Hero – movie or book? Jamie Fraser – Outlander series
  • Snack weakness (food or drink)? Rich cake, cobblers, cookies, do you see a trend here??
  • What’s your Astrological sign? Scorpio
  • Do you write sweet and cuddly or toe-curling steamy lovin’ stories? More toe-curling. One of my critique partners said she needed a cigarette after reading one of the scenes. They are officially listed as “spicy.”
  • Do you read sweet and cuddly or toe-curling steamy lovin’ stories? Both. Depends on my mood.

ME: What’s on your desk when you write?

K.B: Oh boy. Too much! I have a calendar b/c I don’t want to punch a hole in the wall, a daily calendar with dog funnies, a digital picture frame, phone, assortment of mouse pads (but no mouse), coaster, shell with the Lord’s Prayer carved into it, pen, various papers with notes on them, papers with to-do list, wedding album, lamp, candle, my Proud to Be a Rose button from TWRP, a solar powered Hoops & Yoyo bobble head that shakes back and forth when exposed to light: the holder reads “I’m in my worry-free zone”. Oh yeah, and the laptop.

ME: Do you write to music or quiet? If you do write with music, can you share one song that’s significantly impacted this story?

K.B: Quiet. But the fish tank is right outside my office so it’s like writing by a gently flowing stream.

ME: What’s your favorite line from your most recent release? Why?

K.B: My most recent release is Werewolves in London. To set up the scene, we’re in the heroine, werewolf Vonda’s, POV. Here goes:

Thank God she had irregular heat cycles. The last time the heat ran through her veins seemed mild compared to the desire Tom evoked in her, and yet she hadn’t resisted the urge to mate. Look how that ended, with her husband screaming to the divorce judge that she was a furry dog.

What had she been thinking? Her ex couldn’t even tell the difference between a dog and a wolf.

Why do I like this? I think it’s a bit funny that what upsets her the most out of her failed marriage is her ex-husband couldn’t tell the difference between a dog and a wolf.

ME: What’s next? You don’t have to get specifics – but feel free to leave a tantalizing snippet or cryptic hook.

K.B: The second in my Draconia Tales series, Warrior Lover, comes out later this year or at the beginning of next year. Not sure of the release date yet. Am really excited about this one as the hero, Enar, kept trying to be the main player on the stage in Magical Lover. He finally gets his role here and he’s really happy about it. Stay tuned for Enar and Lily’s story.

ME: Who is your favorite character from Greek Mythology OR which Olympian would you want to be? And why?

K.B: Oh boy. Hard question! I guess I’d have to say Diana, or Artemis, b/c she’s a goddess in charge of wild things.  I like nature, so this seems to be a good fit.

Tuesday Talent – Joanne Brothwell

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012

Today’s spotlight is shining on the glamorous and gorgeous author Joanne Brothwell. Her writing is equally as lovely as she is and I’m thrilled to have her stop by and chat with us today.

Her novel, Stealing Breath, is a must read. If you haven’t snapped up your copy yet, you should. You won’t be sorry.

Without further ado, let’s jump into our interview.

Thanks for being here today Joanne!

Me: What was the first book you read that grabbed you? What genre? Who is the author?

J.B: The Witching Hour by Anne Rice. I would say this is a paranormal/horror. I loved it – the rich, detailed descriptions of New Orleans, the fabulous historical information, the unique characters. I couldn’t put it down!

Me: Is there an author that you get fan-girl crazy over? Have you ever met him/her? Do you want to?

J.B: Cassandra Clare. If I could meet her, I would just die. Her writing is so beautiful, and her characters so vivid. I would totally Squee! if I had a chance to talk to her!

Me: What’s your:

  • Favorite color? Pink. I’m totally girlie, I LOVE everything pink!
  • Favorite season? Summer. I just love to bask in the sun :)
  • Favorite Hero – movie or book? I really have a soft spot for Christopher Reeve as Superman. My first fictional crush.
  • Snack weakness (food or drink)? Ripple Chips. Yumm.
  • What’s your Astrological sign? Gemini. Dad used to say I was “such a Gemini”, which was probably just because I was such a moody teenager.
  • Do you write sweet and cuddly or toe-curling steamy lovin’ stories? More on the toe-curling steamy, with lots of adrenaline-pounding action!
  • Do you read sweet and cuddly or toe-curling steamy lovin’ stories? Toe-curling, for sure.

Me: What’s on your desk when you write?

J.B: Nothing, actually. I write in a club chair with my laptop on my lap, and sometimes a hot cup of black coffee on a side table.

Me: Do you write to music or quiet? If you do write with music, can you share one song that’s significantly impacted this story?

J.B: Total silence. I can’t think when there is any sound whatsoever. Even my dog whining interrupts my train of thought.

Me: What’s your favorite line from your most recent release? Why?

J.B: “I’m fine,” was all I could say. I wasn’t about to admit out loud I’d been attacked by a glowing-eyed monster.

“Are you sure? You just threw up all over me.”

-Sarah and Evan, in Stealing Breath

Me: What’s next? You don’t have to get specifics – but feel free to leave a tantalizing snippet or cryptic hook.

J.B: Book two, Silencing Breath is nearly finished the editing stage and should be going in for formatting within the next month.

Here’s a little snippet from chapter 1 of Silencing Breath:

The rust-pitted shovel hit the casket with a dry, hollow thud. Stefano pulled the shovelful of earth out, this time leaving behind a hole that revealed the dark mahogany wood below. Ignoring the mineral taste of dirt in his mouth, he slung the soil off to the side and straightened up, grinning at the cavity he’d made in the earth. Finally, the precious bones interred here would be freed from their earthly prison.

Finally. Father is so close now.

Me: Who is your favorite character from Greek Mythology OR which Olympian would you want to be? And why?

J.B: Aphrodite. I totally want to be the Goddess of Love!

Book Signing & Book Birthday Preparations!

Friday, July 13th, 2012

Tomorrow is a BIG DAY!

1. Hollywood Ever After releases!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Isn’t it pretty?

I cannot wait to hear what readers have to say. :)

2. I have a book signing for both my books. Which means I’m super EXCITED… and totally nauseous.

Here’s the thing. Book signings are a wonderful way to meet readers and ‘sell’ your book. There is nothing cooler than having people eagerly snatch up your book, want your autograph, and promptly purchase it. I mean, it’s your book. The book you wrote, went sleepless over, had dreams over, ‘bled’ over – or almost, at times. And now, it’s here for other’s to read and enjoy. Yay! Right?

But… (doubt demons arriving) What if no one comes? What is no one wants your book? What if someone has read your book and was so frustrated by it that they hunt you down to confront you at your book signing? (Okay, I have an overly developed imagination, but I am a writer after all.) Basically, what if the signing is a bust?

There’s no way of knowing.

What I do know? Tomorrow I’m CELEBRATING the release of my second book (that is so awesome to say!)!!!

And I’m having a book signing! And while I’m grounded enough to know that there will not be a line around Barnes and Noble, I do hope that a few folks (not related to me!!) will show up. :)

If you’re in San Antonio (or the Hill Country), feel free to stop by :) ! The details are HERE!

And don’t forget to drop by the Blog Tour for Josh & Claire’s story … and cool Stuff!

Greek Mythology Blog Challenge: E is for…

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

Moving along in my super abbreviated Greek Mythology 101 :)

Because she is near and dear to my heart, I’m going to mention Euryale for E. One of Medusa’s Gorgon sisters, Euryale was everything dreadful that Medusa eventually became. The Gorgons, Euryale and Stheno, were rumored to be almost gargoyle like: tusks, bronze claws, snake hair, and having foul tempers.

I have to say, I’d be rather foul tempered if I was saddled with such looks.

But part of one myth reveals that these sisters were fiercely devoted to one another. When Medusa was killed, the sisters began to moan and cry so loudly that all could hear their grief and even the Gods were struck by their suffering.

**I have news… :) Hollywood Ever After is almost here! I KNOW! My spicy contemporary romance releases THIS Saturday: July 14th. And to help kick things off in style I’ll be talking all things Hollywood Ever After: Josh, Claire, Hollywood, Red Carpets, Older lady/younger fellow romances, and movies. I hope you’ll drop by once or twice:

Tuesday Talent – JEAN MURRAY

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

It’s Tuesday and I have the fabulous Jean Murray in the spotlight. A fellow Crescent Moon Press author, Miss Murray is a talented, generous spirit that can write – I mean WRITE!

Diving into the interview…

Me: What was the first book you read that grabbed you? What genre? Who is the author?

J.M: It was Noah by Jacquelyn Frank.  She opened my eyes to the world of paranormal romance.  I had always read mainstream suspense, but about five years ago picked up a book off the shelf, wanting to try something new.  Blown away, I cursed myself for missing out on paranormal genre.  It had everything I ever wanted- action, drama and romance.  I loved it so much, I started to write my own stories and became published in 2011.

Me: Is there an author that you get fan-girl crazy over? Have you ever met him/her? Do you want to?

J.M: I’m a huge JR Ward fan.  Yes, I would go totally fan-girl over her both as a reader and writer.  I respect the impact she has had on the series industry.  Not to mention her ability to write from the male perspective and exploitation of “male bonding” at its finest.  Who doesn’t love the Black Dagger Brotherhood?

What’s your:

  • Favorite color?  Blue in any variation. Right now, teal is my summer fav!
  • Favorite season?  Fall, I love all the reds, yellows and greens. My husband and I picked that season to get married.  It was beautiful.
  • Favorite Hero – movie or book?  Selene from the Underworld movie. Would love to be her!
  • Snack weakness (food or drink)? My weaknesses are coffee and dark chocolate. Together is even better.
  • What’s your Astrological sign? Taurus.  Yes, I’m loyal and stubborn, just ask my husband :)
  • Do you write sweet and cuddly or toe-curling steamy lovin’ stories?  Definitely, toe-curling steamy love stories.
  • Do you read sweet and cuddly or toe-curling steamy lovin’ stories?  I like to read what I write, so that would be toe-curling steamy lovin.

Me: What’s on your desk when you write?

J.M: A very large cup of coffee, stacks of Ancient Egyptian research books, and my lap top.

Me: Do you write to music or quiet? If you do write with music, can you share one song that’s significantly impacted this story?

J.M: I love to write to music.  I have a play list for my current Key to the Cursed series.

I needed some dark inspiration that speaks from the soul to include Skillet, Breaking Benjamin, and Evanescence.

Me: What’s your favorite line from your most recent release? Why?

J.M:  Soul RebornEverything about her was perfect. Too perfect. Anything that felt this good had consequences. (Asar, Chapter 13)

I love this scene.  After Lilly saves Asar’s life, he takes her to Aaru, Paradise Isle of the Underworld. His home. Soulless, he desperately seeks relief from his emptiness. Lilly has the living energy he craves, but nothing comes without a price.

Me: What’s next? You don’t have to get specifics – but feel free to leave a tantalizing snippet or cryptic hook.

J.M: Soul Awakened is my next release and the second book in the Key to the Cursed Trilogy.  This is Bakari’s, Kendra’s and Bomani’s story.  Both have stolen her heart, only one can capture her soul and her innocence.

This was a really fun book to write (a bit of a love triangle), but also one of the most challenging.  I can’t wait to hear what readers think, the only problem—my trilogy just evolved into another few books.  The loser needs to be redeemed.

Me: Who is your favorite character from Greek Mythology OR which Olympian would you want to be? And why?

J.M: I’m sort of biased because I write about Ancient Egyptian Mythology and I love that the Underworld gods are benevolent—well mostly. I would love to be Asar (Osiris, Greek variation of the name).  He is my hero in Soul Reborn. Okay, that fact that he is a male doesn’t escape me, but Asar held such a pivotal role in the religion. He was judge, jury and executioner for the souls who journeyed to the underworld. Only if they passed the final test would he grant them entrance to the paradise isle of the underworld—Aaru.  He rewarded souls that had lived just lives and condemned those who didn’t.

Greek Mythology A-Z Challenge: D is for…

Friday, July 6th, 2012

Returning to my Greek Mythology Blog Challenge after almost a decade (maybe not quite that long, but it felt like it), we’re back! And today we’re on the letter D (yes, only D – I know, I’m really really slow…)

D is for Daemon. Who or what is daemon?

Not the ‘bad boy’ Salvatore brother from Vampire Diaries, sorry… No, daemon was a spirit assigned by Zeus to watch over a mortal throughout his life. There daemon was also a kind of inner voice or inspiration – something that would help with decisions and actions. Kind of like a guardian angel. Or possibly, a conscience…

Not at all the way we think of the word that eventually evolved from daemon – demon.

The Roman equivalent for this word = Genius.

But since I mentioned Damon (as in Salvatore brother) I thought I’d post a lovely picture of Ian Somerhalder (aka Damon Salvatore) to help everyone start the weekend with a smile.

You’re welcome :) Anyone have plans this weekend? The minions and I will be seeing the new Spider-Man.

Have a great weekend!
