Tuesday Talent – VICKI BATMAN

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Happy Tuesday!

I am thrilled to have the sassy and sweet Vicki Batman visiting with us today. If you’ve never met Vicki in person, you’re in for a treat. She’s delightfully funny and genuinely kind. She’s a DARA and Plotting Princess pal of mine, too – I know, I AM SO LUCKY! And today, so are you. Put on your tiaras, have a glass of champagne and get to know Miss Batman.

Take it away Vicki!

Me: What was the first romance or book you read that grabbed you? Who is the author?

V.B.: When I was fourteen, my aunt lent my mom books written by Emilie Loring. They are sweet with strong girls and strong men. I’ve read them over and over. My goal is to have all in hardback.

Me: Is there an author that you get fan-girl crazy over? Have you ever met him/her? Do you want to?

V.B.: Janet E. Oh, yes, I’ve met her at book signings. Like the time I made poster girls and named them my friend and sister when they couldn’t go to the signing. Janet looked at them and died laughing, then asked if she could autograph them. She also held them for photos. Then my friends and I went to an all night diner, a group of ladies go, “You’re the girls with the people.”  LOL

Me: What’s your:

  • Favorite color? Red
  • Favorite season? Spring, Summer, Fall.
  • Favorite Hero – movie or book? James Bond, Indiana Jones–sigh.
  • Snack weakness (food or drink)? Hershey’s chocolates and diet Coke.
  • What’s your Astrological sign? Virgo
  • Do you write sweet and cuddly or toe-curling steamy lovin’ stories? Both!
  • Do you read sweet and cuddly or toe-curling steamy lovin’ stories? Both!

Me: What’s on your desk when you write?

V.B.: Golly–a special project pile. Notes I don’t want to forget. A lamp made from a huge silver pitcher. Desk top. Phone, Sticky notes with reminders all lined in a row in front of the monitor. Monitor with speakers. Diet Coke.

Me: Do you write to music or quiet? If you do write with music, can you share one song that’s significantly impacted this story?

V.B.: I do write with music on and usually, it is classical guitar.  However, I love Chris Botti (are you listening, sweetie?) and mentioned him in my book, Temporarily Employed. The hero puts on his CD for mood music. LOL

Me: What’s your favorite line from your most recent release? Why?

V.B.: “I have a theory about love” from “Man Theory.” Let’s just say a special person said something which sparked my imagination.

Me: What’s next? You don’t have to get specifics – but feel free to leave a tantalizing snippet or cryptic hook.

V.B.: “Man Theory and Other Stories” is available now. “Store Wars” comes out August 2012 from MuseItUp Publishing and “Twinkle Lights” will be available December 2012 from MuseItUp. I’ll probably do another quickie collection next year. And then, there’s the book….

Interview with AVERY OLIVE!!!

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

I’m thrilled to have fellow Crescent Moon author, Avery Olive visiting the blog today! Her book, A Stiff Kiss, is available NOW on Kindle – and will be available on NOOK and print SOON. Check her website (links at the bottom) to stay in the loop. ;)

Thanks for dropping by the blog Avery! We’ll jump right in!

Me: What was the first romance or book you read that grabbed you? Who is the author?

A.O: I think it was a Nicholas Sparks Book… I was crazy about him—still am. I also remember reading Princess Bride back in the day by William Goldman.

ME: Is there an author that you get fan-girl crazy over? Have you ever met him/her? Do you want to?

A.O: I’m not going to lie, I am HUGE Twilight Fan… and no I haven’t met Mrs. Meyer, yet.

ME: What’s your:

  • Favorite color? Black or Blue
  • Favorite season? Spring
  • Favorite Hero – movie or book? Honestly, I know this is totally lame, but I don’t have a favourite hero.
  • Snack weakness (food or drink)? Dr. Pepper and Ketchup Chips
  • What’s your Astrological sign? I’m Cancer… which always seems wrong to say that. But… it beats saying I’m a crab.
  • Do you write sweet and cuddly or toe-curling steamy lovin’ stories? Well thus far it’s all been pretty tame, since I write for the Young Adult audience. Though once and while I think I should write a full on romance packed with steamy scenes.
  • Do you read sweet and cuddly or toe-curling steamy lovin’ stories? Since I write YA, I tend to read a lot of YA so I’d say more the cute and cuddly love stories :)

ME: What’s on your desk when you write?

A.O: Uh… I’m not sure you want to know. Right now there are empty Dr. Pepper cans, stacks of random paper, books, socks (fuzzy in case my feet get cold) a printer, random junk, office supplies… to be honest there is only a small square of clean space for my netbook. Though it’s a goal of mine to clean my entire office, yet again.

ME: Do you write to music or quiet? If you do write with music, can you share one song that’s significantly impacted this story?

A.O: I write to music for sure. It’s nice to have background noise and I find it can help you get into a scene, whether it’s sad or action or fun or just internal dialogue there really is a song for every moment in every ones lives.

A song that impacted A Stiff Kiss? There are a few scenes that required some sadness… I seem to have a rock, stone cold heart and had trouble getting into the mood. I’d listen to songs, until finally I had to make an eternal loop of every sad song I could find. Have a Little Faith in Me by John Hiatt helped with that, and so did Last Kiss by Pearl Jam. They are both super sad, emotional songs.

ME: What’s your favorite line from your most recent release? Why?

A.O: “Some people collect stamps, baseball cards, go to war monuments. I like to visit cemeteries, go to funerals, and see the occasional dead body in the morgue. I don’t really see what’s wrong with that.” –Xylia

“This is one of those moments where it probably would be safer to bite my own arm off to make sure I won’t wake her.” –Landon

The first is just funny. Xylia has a bit of a corky side and this is a line that shows that.

The second is typical man thinking at its best. And I love it as a teaser, you have no idea who the person he doesn’t want to wake up is. Could be Xylia, could be someone else :)

ME: What’s next? You don’t have to get specifics – but feel free to leave a tantalizing snippet or cryptic hook.

A.O: No tantalizing snippets or hooks, but I am putting the finishing touches on a ghost story :)

Author Bio:

Avery Olive is proudly Canadian.  She is married and has one child. When she’s not helping raise her very energetic and inquisitive son, she can be found working on her latest novel–where she devilishly adds U’s into every word she can.

When she is looking for a break Avery enjoys cake decorating, losing herself in a good book, or heading out to the lake to go camping.

The release of Avery’s first novel proves to her it won’t be the last. As long as her family continues to be supportive, she can find the time, and people want to read, Avery vows to keep on writing.

A Stiff Kiss Book Blurb:

Who knew kissing a corpse would change everything?

Death always hits Xylia Morana too close to home, but she likes it that way. She hangs out with the terminally ill, attends random funerals, and every so often, when the weather is right, she sleeps in open graves.

But after Landon Phoenix, the high school hottie, dies in Xylia’s arms, she sneaks into the morgue to say goodbye. How could she know stealing a kiss from his corpse would wake him up?

With Landon returned to the living and suddenly interested in Xylia, life has new meaning. But what Xylia doesn’t realize is that by kissing Landon back to life, she’s thrown Life and Death off balance. The underworld demands a body, and it might just have to be Xylia’s this time.

Mr. Curmudgeon and His Stick

Sunday, February 19th, 2012

An old man and his dogs walk through my neighborhood every morning. I call him Mr. Curmudgeon.

He carries a large angry looking stick with him and scowls the entire time he’s walking. When one of his massive dogs starts barking, hairs on the back on its neck up barking, he stops. Not to stop them or pull them away, but to let them bark their fill at whatever or whoever it is they’re chewing out in dog-speak. He’ll just stand there, waiting patiently.

When the dog has barked himself out or the other dog has managed to pull the man forward, they proceed along their usual circuit.

Did I mention that this was during the going to school hours? I smiled and waved at him every morning for the first four months of school. He scowled pointedly at me in return. I’m trying to figure out why he takes his walks during the time that pre-school through fifth grade kiddos line the sidewalks and street in packs, bouncing and chattering as they make the trek to our nearby elementary school.

And I’ve come up with a theory: He carries the stick for the kids – not the dogs.

Things I Do When I’m Sick II

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Yep – germs just love me. The Hill Country and I have some serious issues to work through. Preferably sooner vs. later.

But, since I’m down for the count, I guess I’ll…

Read:

Wasteland (Wasteland, #1)Wasteland by Lynn Rush

and/or

Mortal Deception by Liz Rothmortal deception

Watch:

Monday nights episode of Castle – cuz I sacked out at 8:30 that night. And I know I missed the first of a two part ‘cliffhanger’ type episode. So, watching it is totally top priority for me!!!!

I guess the whole 8:30 bedtime should have been a subtle hint that I would soon be down for the count?

Add five or six loads of laundry (never ending with 4 kids) and you get my day.

What do you do when you’re sick?

Raising a cup of chicken broth in your general direction and toasting your good health!!!!

Interview with NIKKI DUNCAN!

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Nikki_in_Snow

I’m tickled pink to have the one and only Nikki Duncan visiting today – Valentine’s Day! It’s like getting chocolate, flowers and something sparkly all at once.

Nikki’s one of those people that makes you laugh – which I LOVE to do. Her books rock! Remember to read them with the AC cranked down and enjoy ;) !

ME: What was the first romance or book you read that grabbed you? Who is the author?

Nikki: Sadly, I don’t remember. I know I’ve always loved romance stories and a few of my early reads stick in my mind plot wise. One was a contemporary and the other a historical. The historical was my favorite, but I haven’t managed to track it down yet. Would love to one day, but then I worry I wouldn’t love it as much if I did.

Me: Is there an author that you get fan-girl crazy over? Have you ever met him/her? Do you want to?

ND: It used to be Nora Roberts and I’ve met her and chatted with her enough times that while I still love her I’ve begun to see her as a normal person. LOL Then it was JR Ward, and I have some fun stories from the times I’ve met her. These days, I tend to read authors after I meet them so I’ve fallen for them as people first.

ME: What’s your:

  • Favorite color? I guess it would have to be burgundy.
  • Favorite season? Spring when I can open the windows and enjoy the weather.
  • Favorite Hero – movie or book? Wolverine or Christopher Reeve in Somewhere In Time. *sigh*
  • Snack weakness (food or drink)? Anything fattening for a snack. Big Red for a drink.
  • What’s your Astrological sign? Pisces, though I don’t much follow what any of that means.
  • Do you write sweet and cuddly or toe-curling steamy lovin’ stories? I like to think they’re a combo of both, but they lean more toward steamy.
  • Do you read sweet and cuddly or toe-curling steamy lovin’ stories? Both. I just want to be swept away by the characters.

ME: What’s on your desk when you write?

ND: Nothing. I either need it cleaned off or I write on the laptop somewhere else. Typically I’m away from the desk to avoid the distraction of emails, Twitter and such.

ME: Do you write to music or quiet? If you do write with music, can you share one song that’s significantly impacted this story?

ND: Most typically to music, though I can write to quiet or to the sounds of screaming kids. As for a song that’s impacted a story… Depends on the book. Sometimes there isn’t just one but it’s more pieces of songs.

ME: What’s your favorite line from your most recent release? Why?

ND: “How can I make your day better, Lori?” It’s the line in the scene that shifts everything for her. And because he’s just being plain wicked when he asks.

ME: What’s next? You don’t have to get specifics – but feel free to leave a tantalizing snippet or cryptic hook.

ND: Next up is Criminal Promises. It’s about a detective who’s caught between the duty of a promise and the pull of his heart.

Thanks for taking time from your Valentine’s day to share with us, Nikki!

Here are all the places you can find her and her books!

Compass, my wonderful steamy contemporary romance, will be published! By InkSpell Publishing! It’s slated for an August release!!! Which is good because it’s the kind of book you could totally enjoy on the beach, or having a vacation.

Compass is a globe trotting romantic romp with stops in

New York

and England…

There’s an absolutely dreamy British hero – SIGH

And a heroine that every woman can relate to. I like Claire a lot. I hope you will too.

Of course, you’ll have to READ the book to find out if Josh and Claire are as awesome as I think (and hope) they are. I’ll let you know when you can get your copy!!!

SMILING BROADLY!!!!!!

Bad Things Always Happen in Caves…

Friday, February 10th, 2012

Kid #2 made this observation (Bad Things Always Happen in Caves) tonight while we were watching the 13th Warrior.

She’d made this observation before so I decided to make a list of the ‘bad things’. Turns out, she’s right.

Golum lives in a cave – The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Captain Hook decided to drown Tiger Lily in a cave

All kinds of wrong happened in a cave in The Descent (in an awesomely creepy way)

Luke Skywalker was strung up in an ice cave (does this count as an actual cave?) in Empire Strikes Back. And wasn’t

Finding the ‘mother’ in the 13th Warrior

The Tsavo Lions (Ghost and the Darkness) had a scary cave – or den, depending on how technical you want to be here.

The Bone Collector

The alien hive- ship from Cowboys and Aliens

The aliens tunnel/cave thingie in Super 8

Even, Doofenschmirtz (of Phineas and Ferb) attempts to trap the kids in a cave with the self destruct button on one of his  ‘Inators’ (Ballad of Bad Beard)

You get the picture. Caves = Bad Things.

Which is weird because I’m finishing the last few pages of Hades story (all anti-hero delectable bad boy goodness) and he LIVES in a cave. Okay, technically it’s the Underworld, but you have to go through a cave, making it part of where he lives … nevermind. All I’m saying is that caves can’t be all bad, right?

Any positive cave stories you can think of? Feel free to add to my Bad List. Let’s see how long this puppy gets :)

Pen Name Dilemma…

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

I’m thrilled to share that my contemporary romance, Compass, has received an offer of publication (more details will follow soon)!

But now I’m facing a dilemma.

Will the readers of Medusa and Hades, (lyrical, fantasy romance series with appropriate levels of romance and steaminess)  be the same readers of Compass (modern, funny, intensely sensual romance)?

Possibly, but not necessarily. The last thing I want to do is chase away readers, right? It’s frustrating to pick up a book excepting one thing and finding its pages contain something completely different.

Sometimes it’s a pleasant surprise, sometimes it’s NOT!

Successful authors like Jo Davis/J.D Tyler, Liz Lipperman/Liz Roth, Tessa Adams/Tracy Wolff, and even Nora Roberts/JD Robb use different names for different genres. Readers then know what they’re getting, the pen name steers them in the right direction. Obviously, I’m not balancing the success of these authors – but I’m hoping to get there soon!

Please share your thoughts on this…

Should I have a seperate Pen Name for my contemporary romances??

If you think I need one, what do you think of Alex Summers.

Why Alex? Well – Sasha is Russian for Alexander AND Alex was my nickname (I hated Sasha) through Middle School and part of High School… So that’s why :)

 And Thank You!!!!
